National Sports Day: History and Development · Global Voices

September 9th is a special day in the Indonesian sports calendar. It was celebrated as the National Sports Day, a warning that had a deep history since 1948. The history of Haornas began with an Indonesian effort to participate in their first Olympics in London, England. At the time, Indonesia was still in its early stages of international recognition, and Indonesian athletes faced administrative constraints that hinder their participation.

At that time, even though Indonesia was offered the option to use Dutch passports, Indonesia still refused to compete on behalf of its own nation. In the face of the situation, Sri Sultan Hamenkubuwono IX, who is the chairman of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, along with the Sports Association of the Republic of Indonesia (PORI), now known as the Indonesian National Sports Committee, launched an initiative to organize the National Sports Plate (PON) on September 9, 1948 in Solo.

As time went by, on September 9, 1983, President Soeharto set that date as National Sports Day through the inauguration of Sriwethan Stadium in Surakarta. This hearing is written in the Indonesian Republican President's Decision number 67 in 1985 on National Sports Day. The press reflects the commitment to fund sports and improve national sports overall. With this decision coming, Haornas is not only a warning event, but also a moment to advance and develop sports throughout Indonesia. National Sports Week, first held in 1948, now one of the biggest and most prestigious sports shows in the land.

Before the official decision about Haornas' anniversary date, there were several proposals regarding the proper day's enquiry. At Paripurna KONI XIII's trial held in Senayan, Jakarta, on May 1617, 1983, Chairman of General KONI Center, Sri Sultan Haengku Buwono IX, proposed September 10th as a memorial day. It's based on aspirations to arouse the spirit of sports among the society and improve its national performance. However, the decision finally set the 9th of September as an official day to celebrate the National Sports Day.

Today's National Sports Day is celebrated with various activities and events aimed at raising awareness of the importance of sport and health. Programs and sporting events are held throughout Indonesia to motivate society to be more active in sports. Haornas' warning was also a momentum to evaluate the development and achievement of sports in Indonesia, and to plan strategic measures for the future.

Overall, the National Sports Day is a reflection of the long trip of Indonesian sports. From the denial of using Dutch passports to finally becoming one of the greatest sports events, Haornas described the nation's determination and passion to achieve and contribute to the sport of the world. The establishment of September 9th as the National Sports Day is not just a annual warning, but also as a tribute to the efforts and dedication of athletes and sports workers throughout Indonesia.
